FAQs About Keto Desserts and Keto Cookies

What Desserts Can I Eat on a Keto Diet?

Well, anything, with a little bit of creativity. What you can’t eat are the sugar loaded cakes and desserts that fill the shelves of our local stores and bakeries, because often just a few bites will blow your suggested daily carbohydrate allowance that keeps you in ketosis (not to mention the addictive sugary road they’ll lead you back down).

However, you’ll find great keto-friendly recipes for your favorite sugarless desserts right here on our site and all over the web. Here are some ideas:

    • Cookies – We’ll start with our favorite since this is our area of expertise! If you don’t want to wait for your HighKey keto cookies to arrive, there are a ton of delicious options you can bake at home (scroll down to get started).
    • Ice Cream – Keto ice cream takes a little more work but if you’re determined to get your ice cream fix it's well worth it.
    • Brownies – HighKey has also mastered the brownie, our Keto Chocolate Fudge brownies are made with almond flour, just add eggs and butter for a brownie that delivers. There are lots of twists you can add with our mix or you can find many keto friendly brownie recipes online.
    • Cookie Dough – This article is all about keto cookies, right? So of course we cover keto cookie dough too! (Just keep reading!)
    • Cupcakes – Keto cupcakes swap out traditional flours for nut flours and regular sugar with keto friendly sweeteners.
Can You Eat Cookies on a Keto Diet?

Yes! Just in case you jumped straight here without reading the intro, you can eat keto cookies, provided you use keto cookie recipes (like those below) or order some of our delicious HighKey low carb cookies.

What Is the Lowest Carb Flour for Cookies?

The lowest carb flour is hazelnut flour (5g per ¼ cup), very closely followed by almond flour. There are a number of great keto-friendly flours you’ll find used in keto recipes and that you can use in your own creations. Some of the most popular are:

    Coconut Flour

Coconut flour is a common substitute used in dessert recipes as many like the subtle coconut flavoring it can offer your recipes. Contrary to its sweet taste, coconut flour is low-sugar and gluten-free, which makes it perfect for use in keto cookie recipes.

Generally, a ¼ cup of coconut flour contains 120 kcals, 18g carbs, 6g protein, 4g of fat, and a whopping 10g of fiber.

    Almond Flour & Almond Meal

Since baking a keto-friendly recipe involves many substitutions, you’ll want to keep a few additional ingredients in your kitchen to make sure your food still has a rich flavor and texture. Cocoa powder is a great way to make a recipe chocolate-y without having to add sugar-laden chocolate chips. Coconut milk can be used as a creamy milk substitute, adding both flavor and fat to a baked good.

Learning how to bake while doing the keto diet may be an adjustment, but once you realize what ingredients you can utilize, you can still enjoy treats like bread and brownies. Keeping the right items at home can make baking a breeze so you won’t have to miss out on creating some of your favorite foods.

    Hazelnut Flour

Generally, a ¼ cup of hazelnut flour contains 181 kcals, 5g carbs, 4.3g protein, 17.5g fat, and 2.8g of fiber

    Are Oreos Keto or Vegan?

Vegan, but unfortunately not keto. Each Oreo contains approximately 7g of carbs, so if you’re eating a strict keto diet just three Oreos may use up all your carbohydrate allowance for the day. Instead, make your own Oreo-inspired keto cookies (there’s a recipe for some down below, so keep reading)

    Is Peanut Butter Keto?

All-natural peanut butters are keto, but  be sure to look at the packaging as many popular peanut butter brands contain added sugar. Generally, two tablespoons of peanut butter have just 3.5g of carbs, which makes it a perfect addition to keto snack and dessert recipes.

    Are Peanut Butter Cookies Keto?

Not necessarily, be sure to look for recipes that specify Keto Peanut Butter Cookies. If the recipe you find  contains sugar and wheat flour then you need to hit reverse pronto! There are a ton of recipes for keto friendly peanut butter cookies online and we’ve listed one here, so just jump there to grab the perfect recipe for keto peanut butter cookies.

    Is Sugar-Free Chocolate Keto-Friendly?

The answer to this is tricky as the answer is yes, in theory. The problem with some sugar-free chocolate is in the sweeteners used , as certain sweeteners like maltitol still have a glycemic impact, despite not actually containing sugar. Look for brands that use stevia or erythritol (like Lily’s Dark Chocolate baking chips).

Dark chocolate can be a part of your keto diet provided you make sugarless choices and move away from the high calorie, milk chocolate most of us would be happy to eat by the pound. When you want to satisfy a sweet craving or use chocolate chips in your recipes, choose dark chocolate with a high percentage of cocoa – at least 70%. When it comes to the percentage of your dark chocolate, the higher the better, as one ounce of 100% (completely unsweetened) chocolate has just 3g of carbs.

Of course, while that sounds like the answer to our eating-a-pound-of-chocolate dreams, dark chocolate, especially in the highest percentages, can take some getting used to.

    Keto Cookie Recipes

    Below you’ll find recipes for:

    Keto Chocolate Chip Cookies

    HighKey Chocolate Chip Mini Cookies

Okay, before we dive into the recipes for making keto chocolate chip cookies at home, if you’re willing to wait, or are interested in taking your keto cookie on the go, then you have to try our Chocolate Chip Mini Cookies. These cookies are literally so delicious they have other members of the HighKey community Googling the ingredients just to double-check they’re actually keto.

    Basic Keto Chocolate Chip Cookies

If those chocolate chip cookie cravings are hitting you hard and you just have to have a cookie RIGHT NOW, then these Keto Chocolate Chip Cookies look delicious and are made with ingredients you’re pretty likely to have in your pantry if you are a keto dieter. In just half an hour, you can be sitting back with a warm cookie in hand. If you divide the recipe into 10 cookies, each will only cost you 80 calories and 3.3g of carbs (total), so tey’re a major winner if you’re feeling snacky for freshly baked cookies.

Flourless Almond Butter Chocolate Chip Cookies

There aren’t all that many cookies you can make without any flour at all, and even fewer that come out looking like the carb-filled traditional cookies you’re craving. These Flourless Almond Butter Chocolate Chip Cookies do just that – with just 5 ingredients and 8 minutes in the oven you’ll have a delicious almond-based cookie. If you love them you can easily swap the almond butter out for a different nut butter, or swap the chocolate chips out for something else like pistachios.

Wait! Can I eat dark chocolate chips on keto?

Yes, but as with anything you need to be conscious about how much you’re eating and as mentioned above you need to read the labels to ensure they are keto friendly. The higher the percentage the dark chocolate, the more you can add to your recipes, so choose chocolate chips that are at least 70%. Again, if you choose sugar-free chocolate chips, be sure to check which sweetener is being used and avoid any that use maltitol.

    Keto Peanut Butter Cookies

    Low Carb Peanut Butter Cookies

If you’re looking to make the perfect crispy keto peanut butter cookies then you have to try these Low Carb Peanut Butter Cookies. They take less than half an hour to make, contain only ingredients you already have on hand (provided you have coconut flour and keto friendly sweetener) and have just 4.6g carbs (1.8g net) for each cookie. Such a simple way to get a low-carb treat.

Coconut Flour Peanut Butter Keto Cookies

If you’re looking for an easy recipe you can throw together with the keto staples in your kitchen, this Coconut Flour Peanut Butter Cookie recipe is a good one to turn to. All you need is peanut butter (make sure it’s all-natural), coconut flour, eggs, sweetener, sugar-free or unsweetened dark chocolate chips, and vanilla extract – though if you don’t have the last one you will only miss out on a little of the taste. With 4g net carbs, they’re not my favorite  on this list, but they’re delicious and keto friendly!

    Keto Sugar Cookies

    Keto Fathead Sugar Cookies

If you’ve yet to hear about Fathead dough, I’m about to rock your keto world. Fathead dough is an amazing invention you can use for anything from these Keto Fathead Sugar Cookies to a pizza base. Yep, it’s that versatile – however, it is most certainly not for anyone looking for dairy free, since that’s pretty much all it is. These keto cookies are made from cream cheese, mozzarella, butter, eggs, sweetener, and flavorings – that’s it. They take  a little time to make but the result is a cookie that has just 1.3 net carbs per serving.

    Keto Lemon Sugar Cookies

If you’re a big fan of lemony desserts then these Low Carb Lemon Sugar Cookies will be right up your alley. These cookies have that strong lemon tang you’re looking for, but are just sweet enough to stop them being sour. While this recipe contains common keto baking ingredients, it does take a little work to create these cookies, so if you’re a complete baking beginner you may want to try a different recipe on this list first.

    Keto Shortbread Cookies

    Almond Pecan Shortbread Cookies

While you’re not going to get that sugary, crumbly shortbread yumminess you’re craving, there are a ton of great shortbread-style recipes out there. Namely, this recipe for Almond Pecan Shortbread Cookies marries the deliciousness of pecan pie with a keto-friendly cookie. These are super easy to make, provided you keep an eye on them in the oven, and only have 1.2g net carbs yet 20g of fat. Yum!

    Easy Pistachio Shortbread Keto Cookies

These Easy Pistachio Shortbread Cookies actually look and taste like shortbread. They have that delicious buttery flavor but without all the sugar and carbs – just what you need for the perfect keto shortbread cookies. All you need to make these is butter, almond flour (has to be super-fine), sweetener, vanilla extract, and chopped pistachios. From there, they’re easy to put together and if you wanted to ensure you didn’t eat them all in one go, you can cut just one or two portions off the roll in the fridge and bake, then save the rest to bake  over the next few days.

    Keto Macaroons

    Gluten-Free Coconut Macaroons

Macaroons in their traditional form aren’t  easily replicated to keto friendly (at least not yet), but these amazing gluten-free, Coconut Macaroons are a pretty good substitution and take just five ingredients to make (four if you don’t want to drizzle melted dark chocolate over the top, but come on); egg whites, unsweetened shredded coconut, vanilla extract, fruit allulose blend, and dark chocolate. For a total carb content of 5g (2g net), they’re pretty awesome.

    Thin Mint Keto Macaroons

Okay, so these aren’t exactly like macaroons, at least as you think of them traditionally, but they’re just too good not to share. If you love all things mint and are missing those sugar-filled treats these bite-sized Low Carb Thin Mint Macaroons are sure to hit the spot. The core of these macaroons is coconut, which gives it a naturally sweet taste and a satisfying chewy texture. Plus, they freeze well so you employ strict portion control – if you want to (we won’t tell anyone if you don’t, since they’re only 1g net carbs per macaroon).

    Keto Snickerdoodle Cookies

    Easy Homemade Snickerdoodles

Do you fancy a snickerdoodle, like, right now? We get it, snickerdoodles are a-m-a-z-i-n-g, crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside. If you’ve got a pantry full of ingredients then here’s the recipe for you: Easy Keto Snickerdoodles. Low carb and gluten-free, this recipe is sure to give you your snickerdoodle fix, for just 1.5g net carbs and 13g of fat.

    (Even Easier) HighKey Snickerdoodle Cookies

Of course, we can’t talk about keto snickerdoodle cookies without mentioning our  own ready-to-eat-on-the-go (or anywhere else) Snickerdoodle Cookies. These bite-sized beauties are delicious (our customers' words, as well as ours), come in a resealable bag (because you shouldn’t reallydevour the whole bag…), and only have 1g net carbs. I know. You can thank us later.

    Keto Coconut Cookies

    Chewy Coconut Keto Cookies

How often did you eat coconut before you went keto? Despite the fact that it’s delicious, it probably wasn’t all that often. Now, however… coconut is your best friend when you want to hit that sweet tooth. That’s exactly what these Chewy Keto Coconut Cookies are. These cookies are soft, chewy, you can make an optional frosting if you’re looking for a treat, and they only contain 1.2g net carbs.

    Coconut Almond Crisps

These thin Low Carb Coconut Almond Crisps make the perfect crispy snack to serve guests with tea or coffee so you can have a bite to eat too. Shredded coconut and almond meal give these cookies substance and are held together by yacon syrup, so they’re suitable for anyone without a nut allergy.

    Keto Butter Cookies

    Browned Butter Cacao Nib Cookies

What makes cookies  taste great (besides sugar)? Butter! And, best of all, as keto dieters we can actually eat butter – as much as we want, really. These delicious Browned Butter Cacao Nib Cookies take a little more effort, and you may have to do a little ingredient shopping, but they make a great keto treat for special occasions. Net carbs are just 1.1g, which makes these worth the extra effort.

    Cinnamon Keto Butter Cookies

These Cinnamon Butter Keto Cookies were created out of desperation (the way we come up with some of our best keto creations, right?) and can be thrown together with just almond flour, salted butter, an egg, cinnamon, sweetener, and vanilla extract. While these cookies aren’t the best looking on this list, they are delicious and will satisfy your hunger without blowing your diet. In fact, with just 1g net carbs you can probably help yourself to more than one!

    Keto Oatmeal Cookies

    Oatmeal Raisin Keto Cookies

Thought oatmeal cookies had to be a thing of the past when you went keto? Well, that’s a little true, but these Paleo Oatmeal Raisin Keto Cookies will absolutely satisfy that craving. Because these cookies are also paleo, they’re also dairy-free, gluten-free, and vegan, so you can offer them around to everyone you know, without worry (unless they have a nut allergy). If you want to make these cookies even more keto-friendly, simply swap the few raisins out for something a bit more keto friendly such as  pistachio pieces.

    Keto “Oatmeal” Cookies

These Keto “Oatmeal” Cookies skip the oats and use flax meal, shredded coconut, almond flour, coconut flour, and hemp seeds to give these cookies texture. These cookies will definitely hit the oatmeal cookie craving, but you’re probably going to have to head to the store for some of the ingredients, unless you’re a regular baker or are ready with handy substitutions. For example, while hemp seeds are used in the recipe chia seeds or whole flax seeds could be a great substitute.

    Keto Almond Meal Cookies

    Keto Oreos

Remember that Oreo recipe I promised you above? Well, here it is! These Gluten-Free Keto Oreo Cookies are the perfect substation and have just 2g of carbs. If you’re new to keto you may have to do a little ingredient shopping, but those who have been on the diet for some time may already have everything they need to get started. They take a little more time to prepare than other cookies on the list, but if you’re craving an Oreo these will be well worth it.

    3-Ingredient Almond Flour Cookies

Want to know the best thing about these 3-Ingredient Almond Flour Cookies? They’re ridiculously simple. Do they look mouthwatering? Not necessarily – though a little brush of a liquid sweetener over the top may change that by turning them from pale to golden brown – but they’re delicious and keto-friendly, provided you use a granulated sweetener and not coconut sugar. To spice them up, add some other flavorings into the mixture like cinnamon or dark cocoa powder, or some dark chocolate chips and chopped nuts to make them more interesting.

    Keto Cookies with Coconut Flour

    Basic Coconut Flour Cookies

Some of the cookie recipes on this list get pretty complex and can be a little intimidating – not this recipe. We recommend using super dark chocolate chips and a powdered sweetener – again sugar-free chocolate chips can be questionable (read the packet people!) and avoid traditional powdered sugar. Done right, these cookies are only 2.6g net carbs.
