6 Low Carb Diet Tips to Get You Through the Holiday Season

11-20-20

If you are committed to a keto lifestyle the holidays may seem daunting, but don’t fret! While many traditional holiday foods are not keto friendly, you can absolutely still enjoy your classic favorites and stay low carb.  With a few small adjustments and a little planning, you can have your cake and eat it too 😉

1. Fuel up on fats

Before you head to that holiday gathering, fill up on healthy fats, like those found in low carb nut butters or avocado.  Fueling up on fats keeps you feeling full so you’re less likely to cave and eat foods that aren’t keto friendly.  Plus, fats are a great tool to keep you from reaching for those tempting carbs.

2. Eat before you go

It can be hard to know what’s going to be served at a holiday party, or the dinner you’re attending.  That’s why eating before you go can be really helpful- you won’t be starving, and you can enjoy the keto friendly options at the party without feeling ravenous.  Then, if there are only 1 or 2 things you can have, you’ll still feel satiated.

*HighKey tip: when choosing what to eat before you go, choose foods that are a good blend of fat and protein, like celery with almond butter, or carrot sticks and cheese cubes.

3. Bring something to share

Most hosts are happy to have you bring a dish to share, so plan on bringing a thing or two that you can eat and share with others.  This is one of my favorite strategies, because it takes away the fear that there won’t be anything there for you to eat. Plus, you get to choose what to bring, so you can pick your holiday favorites that fit with keto. Try introducing your friends and family to low carb brownies or a simple cheese platter.

4. Get in the kitchen

There are so many tasty ketogenic recipes out there, from cookies to pies to stuffing, so test out a few new recipes before the holidays hit so you’re armed with some new favorites.  For some inspiration to get you started, check out these creamy Keto Cauliflower Mashed Potatoes.

5. Mix in some keto-friendly products

The holidays can be a busy time, so don’t feel like you have to make everything from scratch.  There are many keto-friendly products out there, so take advantage of the options to make life a little easier during the hectic holiday season.  I love these keto snickerdoodle cookies, and they would look perfect on a pretty holiday plate.

6. Let go of perfectionism

Above all else, try to give yourself some grace during the holidays.  After all, the holiday season is about so much more than food. So if stressing over food and carbs is sending you over the edge, give yourself permission to let go of the need to be perfect.  If you slip up and eat something that puts you over your carb goals, it’s not the end of the world! Just jump back in and do better the next day- ultimately, food is meant to be enjoyed, not to cause stress.

With all the keto recipes and products available, it is easier than ever to stay low carb over the holidays.  All it takes is a little planning and preparation, and you can savor the holidays without interrupting your keto lifestyle. Let us know if you've tried any of the strategies above to stay on track during a holiday season!
