Best Low Carb Keto Sweet Snacks

04-10-20

Whether you are new to keto, are a keto diet veteran, or are somewhere in between, you’re likely to crave a sweet snack at some point.  After all, who doesn’t love a keto sweet snack?  Lucky for you, we’ve got you covered with low carb sweet snacks for every craving!

Keto Sweet Snack Questions

How do I stop craving sweets on keto?

If you’re new to keto, constantly having sugar cravings and wondering what’s going on, you may need to dig a little deeper.  Before committing to a keto lifestyle, you may have been consuming more sugar and refined carbs which results in higher blood sugar levels and more insulin resistance.  When this happens, your body doesn’t respond as well to control blood sugars.

When you switch to a keto diet, sometimes those effects continue, and can result in intense carb cravings, fatigue, extreme hunger, irritability, and even nausea.  Your body is craving sugar as a quick fix to its low energy levels.

The good news is, once you get your body locked into ketosis, aka. “keto-adapted” the extreme cravings will dwindle.  You’ll also notice your fatigue vanishes, your brain seems sharper, and you feel great.  It takes a little patience, so push through those sugar cravings and perhaps indulge in a low carb sweet treat from our list below to take the edge off.

Here are a few more reasons you may be craving keto sweet treats

You are cutting down on carbs gradually instead of all at once
    • If you’re just starting keto, you may find it easier to gradually reduce your carbs, and that’s totally okay!  Since you’re still consuming carbs, your body will naturally crave more.  But, be prepared - this can lead to more sugar cravings until you reach ketosis.

    You’re missing fiber
    • Fiber is a group of carbs that your body can’t break down, and if you’re not getting enough, it can fuel sweet cravings.  Fiber also helps with digestion, so it’s important to try to incorporate it into your keto diet.  Focus on eating high fiber veggies like broccoli, cauliflower, and brussels sprouts.  You could also add in some high fiber fruits, like avocado and berries.

     You’re not following keto 100%
    • If you don’t strictly follow a keto diet, and you cycle back and forth between being keto and eating carbs, it will be much harder to kick carb cravings.  If you struggle with wanting to cheat with non-keto foods, it's helpful to have keto-friendly options for the foods you most commonly crave.  Check out our lists below for the best alternatives to your carb-filled favorites.

What is a good low carb sweet snack?
    • While there are LOTS of options for low carb sweet snacks, one of the simplest is berries and whipped cream. You’ll have to opt for unsweetened whipped cream or sweeten it up a little with a keto-friendly sweetener. Take a handful of blackberries or raspberries, top them with a spoonful of whipped cream, and you’ve got the perfect keto sweet snack.

What snacks are low fat and sweet?

Is there any candy that is keto-friendly?
      • Eating keto doesn’t mean you have to deprive yourself of foods you love, and that includes candy.  From store-bought to homemade, there are plenty of keto sweet treat options for everyone.  The key is knowing where to look!
      • If you’re looking for store-bought candy, you won’t be able to grab just any sugar-free candy out there. Make sure to look at the label because some sugar-free candies contain sugar-free sweeteners, like maltitol and xylitol, that although low on the glycemic index still have an effect on blood glucose and can kick you out of ketosis.  Here are a few keto-friendly candy options:

Can I have chocolate on a keto diet?
    • Don’t worry, you won’t have to give up a chocolate addiction to thrive on the keto diet.  Chocolate can absolutely fit as part of a low carb diet.  The key is in which type of chocolate you choose, and the darker, the better in terms of carbs.  Another reason to indulge - chocolate is packed with health benefits, due to its high levels of antioxidants and flavonoids, so you can treat yourself and benefit your health at the same time.
    • To enjoy chocolate on a keto diet, limit yourself to 1-2 squares at a time, and avoid semi-sweet, milk, white, and regular dark chocolate.  Instead, look for bars labeled 70% dark or more.  One square of 70% chocolate has 3.5 net carbs, while a square of 85% chocolate has only 2 grams of net carbs.
